ISSUE 10 ARCHIVE - A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO THE ISLE OF MAN

Just look at a map and there really is no surprise that the Isle of Man can offer up some top diving, with reefs, wrecks, adrenaline pumping drifts, caves, playful seals and one of the best places in the UK to spot basking sharks in the spring and summer months. One top tip, keep clear between the 6th and 11th June when motorbikes invade the island like some pestilent plague – unless you're joining in for the high speed, thirty-seven mile mountain course for the annual TT Motorbike races. Most of the diving on the Isle of Man operates from the southern end of the island from either Port Erin or Port St Mary.

Out and About
If the picturesque village of Port St Mary or the breathtaking bay town of Port Erin are a little too tame for you then the Island's capital, Douglas, only half an hour drive away has much to offer. This vibrant town is undergoing a type of renaissance at the moment with plenty of shopping, a pleasant quayside leisure area and a National Sports Centre to keep you occupied.

Situated close to Port St Mary near Ronaldsway Airport is the Manx Aviation and Military Museum which opened in 2000 and welcomes visitors at weekends. The Museum is dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives in over 200 flying accidents in and around the Isle of Man, or while serving overseas.

For a cultural hit, then go and visit Castle Rushen, which is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe. Interactive displays throughout the castle include the skillfully replicated sights, sounds and smells of the past to take you back to that olden day Norse period.
