ISSUE 6 ARCHIVE - A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO EATING AND SLEEPING, PORTLAND & DORSET

Well, it’s high time that we took a look at one of Britain’s most popular south coast dive locations – Portland and Weymouth. This part of the Jurassic coast has some excellent diving for all levels making it one of the regular weekend trips for dive clubs. However, having got out of the diving RIB, few of us seem to move far from the picturesque scene of Castletown. So here are a few local treats that perhaps you may want to check out and make the most of your stay.
The Underwater Channel

I’m sure that most of you are already familiar with the convenient choices of the Aqua Hotel, The Breakwater Hotel and The Green Shutters, where the familiar odours of sweaty undersuits and mouldy neoprene are familiar.

The Jurassic Coast has some fantastic walks and beautiful coastline. But also worth a visit is the Portland Museum with information on local wrecks and Portland Castle.

But go over to the Tout Quarry Park, an abandoned quarry at the north east end of Tophill, which has been turned into a sculpture park with various carvings and artifacts.

For a total boys toys experience, go to the Tank Museum at Bovington. It is reputed to have the best collection of tanks in the world comprising over 250 vehicles, from the first tank ever built to the modern Challenger II.
